面向未來的世界自然遺產
琉球群島是扮演「生物多樣性」關鍵的地區
國際NGO保護國際基金會（CI）於2013年從全世界選出34個「生物多樣性熱點」，亦即就地球規模而言具有豐富的生物多樣性且豐富的生物多樣性正瀕臨破壞危機的地區，日本正是其中之一，日本境內的228個地區更成為依國際標準推動生物多樣性保育的關鍵地區（Key Biodiversity Area: KBA），包含西表島在內的八重山群島及山原，寫下擁有最多KBA適用物種的紀錄。
